The method of cutting spur gears and simple helical gears on a milling machine will be explained in detail. GEAR TERMINOLOGY The student should know the meaning of the commonly used gear terms; he should be able to make the necessary calculations for spur gears.
Helical gear can be thought of as an ordinary spur gear machined from a stack of thin shim stock, each limitation of which is rotated slightly with respect to its neighbours as in Fig.11.3.
